The Symbolic Beauty of the Hummingbird: New Dementians' Emblematic Logo Change

At New Dementians, we've always strived to challenge perceptions and illuminate the often-unseen beauty and strengths within people living with dementia. We're excited to announce our recent logo change that embodies this very essence: the hummingbird. Our tagline: "Hover on a Moment" encourages mindfulness and savoring of the present moment, which can be particularly beneficial for individuals with dementia who may struggle to remember. By focussing on the present and cherishing the little things in life, we can help to improve quality of life and bring joy to those living with dementia and their care partners.

Why the Hummingbird?
The hummingbird, though diminutive in size, possesses an unmatched vibrancy and zest. Just like these ethereal creatures, people with dementia have the unique ability to bring brilliance and joy into any environment. Here are some parallels that drew us to this mesmerizing bird:

1. Straight for the Sugar: Hummingbirds, with their swift flight, go straight for the nectar, which is their primary source of energy. Similarly, many individuals with dementia exhibit an innate ability to tap into their sweetness, drawing out moments of clarity and profound connection. They might have altered memories or cognitive abilities, but their essence remains, and in the right moment, it shines through brilliantly.

2. Transient Yet Impactful: Hummingbirds may flit in and out, but their presence, even if momentary, adds splendor to the surroundings. Much in the same way, while a person with dementia may occasionally drift or have fleeting moments of lucidity, those moments are invaluable. They are reminders that beneath the cloak of this condition lies an individual with a wealth of experiences, emotions, and wisdom.

3. Hovering on Moments: The unique ability of hummingbirds to hover is not just an aeronautical wonder but also a metaphor for seizing the present. Instead of yearning for prolonged interactions or continuous coherence, it’s vital to value those transient yet profound moments of connection. These moments, however fleeting, are the true nectar of our interactions.

4. Varied Perspectives: The iridescent plumage of a hummingbird shifts in hue based on the angle of the observer. This serves as a gentle reminder that our perceptions of people with dementia can change based on how we choose to view them. When we adjust our perspectives and look beyond the superficial challenges, the multi-faceted brilliance of these individuals comes to light.

In essence, our logo's shift to the hummingbird is not merely an aesthetic choice but a symbolic gesture. It serves as a testament to our unwavering belief in the inherent beauty and potential of every individual living with dementia. We hope that every time you glimpse this logo, you're reminded of the importance of cherishing every moment, recognizing innate potential, and seeing individuals with dementia in a light that reflects their true, vibrant colors.

Remember: never underestimate the power of focusing on moments, of adjusting our perspective, and of truly seeing people in all their colorful, dynamic glory. Just as the hummingbird continues to mesmerize us with its elegance and energy, so too do individuals with dementia when we choose to view them with the lens of appreciation and understanding.

Yours in caring,

Dawn
